I look at my sweet, handsome little boy and see just that. A little boy. He's growing so fast! Every challenge we put before him this summer, he's blown right through them like we never expected!
In a big boy bed. Check!
Wearing underwear and day potty trained. Check!
With the two biggest toddler milestones behind us (**knocking on wood furiously right now that he doesn't regress from potty training), it has really set in that he's getting so big! We started potty training on a Friday while up north at the lake house and by Sunday, he was telling us and running to the potty himself each time he had to go. We thought maybe it was just with all the extra attention of Nana, Pops, Grandma, and Grandpa up north, but the next week he was accident free all day. Even at daycare! They thought we were crazy when I sent him in underwear that first day, but now they completely get it. The kid was more than ready.
It's been almost two weeks and we haven't looked back once. He wears underwear all day and a diaper at night. He's even dry after his nap on most days. I'm completely shocked, yet glad we took the chance.
This is just a small example of how determined he can be. He's passionate about everything he does from his coloring to playing basketball outside. Aside from being determined, he's also very easy-going. Considering he was a challenging baby, he's turned out to be such a laid back little guy. When Sean steals a toy from him or doesn't let him play, he just walks away and finds something new to play with.
He loves his brother with all his heart. He wakes up in the morning and yells for "Sean-y". They proceed to play on an iPad together. And the rest of the day is about them being together and playing together. Don't get me wrong. They have their moments of bickering and yelling at one another. Maybe even pinching and pushing. But, they seem to be better together.
Evan is obsessed with The Wheels on the Bus! He's been that way since about a year old when we would start reading the book by Raffi together. Now, we have the iPad app and youtube videos with the songs on them. He's very interested in his ABC's and likes the "q-r-s-t-u-v" part of the song. He can count to 10 and has started counting items in his books while we read them. Evan's attachment seems to be to a toy motorcycle, as opposed to a blanket and thumb like Sean. Where Evan goes, the motorcycle goes.
So, naturally it made sense that we get him a bigger one that lights up, makes sounds, and drives on it's own. And, it also made sense that Grandma and Grandpa got him one he could actually scoot himself on. He sure loves his motorcycles. Should I be concerned that we've got a Hell's Angel on our hands?
His favorite part of turning 2 was "blowing out candles". We practiced the whole week leading up to his birthday and he was prepared. I'm pleased to announce he was able to blow out both of his candles on his own both times we celebrated!
As I put away all the birthday decor and found a new spot in the toy room for the new toys, I found myself feeling a little sad. Maybe bittersweet is a better sentiment. I've been awaiting the day I would have two mostly independent little boys, but it's still hard to pack away more things that solidify our decision that our family is complete. My boys aren't babies anymore. They've both grown into adorable, smart, fun boys who rock my world.
I can't imagine my life without my little pookie, Evan, in it. "So, here's to a child who is joyful and clever. Happy day. Happy year. Happy always and ever." ~ Sandra Boynton.
We love you bunches and bunches, Evie!!
