Nana and Pops treated us to dinner at The Hearth on the lake and we came back to watch some Shark Week before the kids went to bed. We sat up and played cards. Since there was rumor of Northern Lights and a view of the space station, we tried to go out on the pontoon boat around 11:30pm, but it was too cloudy where we were. Bummer!
Tuesday morning the boys did some fishing with Pops while I went for a run. I'm trying to get back into my running routine. I love my route up north. I run 2 miles, but the turn around point is right by a farm that has horses right by the road. It's so peaceful having the road to myself for the most part.
We went for a boat ride before lunch and the boys assured me they weren't going to swim at the park so they got dressed. I should have known better! But, it made for some cute photos as we let them swim in the underwear! They were so entertained at the park and swimming, even though there was no one else there. We had to peel them way to get back in time for lunch.
We fed them a quick lunch then decided to go into Gladwin to get ice cream before Nana and Pops headed home. We went to a new place to me and the boys and it was so yummy! I really loved how they got a new scooper and a new container of ice cream out to scoop for Sean's ice cream since there are so many flavors that have tree nuts in them. It was the first time we've had a place do that for us!
After they left, we drove into Gladwin and went to the Riverwalk and the Gladwin Campground to let the kids play in the river and on the play structure. It was a fun afternoon! Once again, the boys were bummed they didn't have their swimsuits, but they went in to their knees. We talked about coming back next time to go tubing down the river.
We grabbed pizza and breadsticks at Hungry Howies in town before we drove back to the house. By then, we were all pretty tired from a long day in the sun! But, it didn't stop the boys one bit. They were out in the lake doing the paddle board all evening until bedtime.
Wednesday, the lake was being treated for algae so we weren't able to swim the entire day. It kind of stunk since it was the warmest day we were up there and the kids were bugging to go jet-skiing and go jump in the lake. We build sand castles in the morning for a while and watched them treat the lake.
We had to pull out all the stops to entertain today. We played with the felt play money we brought and practiced math and reading. We colored on the deck out in the sun. We fished. And we went for a long pontoon boat around the lake where we picked out our dream houses. We played yard games like ladderball and bags. We played baseball. We snacked. We watched a movie. And then it was bedtime. Phew!
Thursday morning the kids were ready to go in the water! Unfortunately it was a little on the cool side. We used the neighbors kayaks and everyone had a few turns. It was so much fun and the boys loved it!
We took the boys a few minutes away to the Sugar Springs campground to walk some trails with Bailey while we waited for it to warm up more in the afternoon. It was actually really fun! We were afraid we'd get lost so after a mile, we turned around to head back. Too many turns and not a lot of signage...
We came back and ate lunch at the house and spent the rest of the afternoon on the lake. We even attempted to pull the boys on the tube in the pontoon. Pops usually does that so Scott was a bit stressed. We had a small mishap that resulted in both boys in the lake, but they got back on and we went around a few times.
We made dinner and did some games with the boys before Scott made a fire. I was so excited that it was actually cool enough outside to wear sweatshirts at the fire! It's been such a hot summer that this was the first time we could wear sweatshirts in the evening! The boys read stories to us by the fire and it was so nice. We went on the wooden swing and enjoyed the refreshing temps. It was a nice night!
Friday morning was cool out again. We cleaned, did some laundry, packed up, and hit the road just after lunch to head home. The boys had a birthday party Saturday morning, otherwise we would have stayed through the weekend. It was nice to get away for the week though! We tried out some new things this time up north.
We have one more "up north" trip coming up next Friday when we camp in Mackinaw City with our neighbors. We'll do some day trips to the UP and to Mackinac Island. I'm excited! There's a small possibility we'll go up north to the cottage one more time after the camping trip for the county fair with the cousins. We'll see...we've been on the go all summer and I'm getting a little tired...
