The time had finally come for their big out of state tournament! We had a hotel in Mt. Pleasant through a block with the team. We arrived Sunday, but the first "event" for Shipyard was on Monday afternoon at 4pm for the opening ceremony and homerun derby. It was hotter than blazes and very crowded since all the teams were there, but the facility was beautiful and the fields were in pristine condition!
For the homerun derby the coach picked Kane and Dom since they've hit the most homeruns on our team this season.
We had a team pool party at the hotel after to cool off! It was a lot of fun!
Wednesday the boys had two games during the heat of the day and it was blazin! They played at noon against the KC Roos from Georgia. Sean ran the scoreboard again with Nicky. They lost 9-1. Same issue with hitting...plus the Roos' pitcher was really good (and a girl!).
We had some time in between the games so ate at the restaurant on site called Swig and Swine with most of the team. It was pretty good!
Our second game was against Mokena Blaze from Illinois. It was a better game for our boys, but we lost 9-4. Evan continued to struggle at the plate.
I think the boys were happy to get out of the heat and sun for the day.
Thursday, we had our first consolation game at 8am. It was an early start! We played a team called Bloom Carroll Bulldogs. It was a very intense game from the start with bickering between the team's parents and the kids going back and forth with scoring. We were down by a lot and started a come back with a great double from Evan and each kid continued to hit after that. We tied up the game and went into extra innings. They started the extra inning with runners on all the bases with 1 out and 1 ball and 1 strike (so weird)! The Bulldogs' pitcher overthrew the ball that the catcher couldn't catch so our runner on 3rd made it home! All we had to do was hold them and we made an amazing double play! We won 10-9!
Since we had the whole rest of the afternoon off from baseball, many of us decided to do the water taxi along the Charleston harbor. We went to Sullivan's Island Beach and had dinner at a fancier Mexican restaurant. It was a fun day!
Our final consolation game on Friday was at 8am again against the Pickerington Predators. It was a good game all around and we probably should have won, but we lost 11-8.
And that was a wrap on Shipyard! We had an amazing trip with our baseball family and even though the boys had some tough competition and fell short, it was more about making memories and experiencing a really cool tournament and ballpark. Some families left after the last game and others stuck around one more day. We enjoyed Charleston for the afternoon and hit the road on Saturday to go home.
