A spooky weekend!

Happy Halloween from the Ferstle household!

Our spooky weekend ended up being the most relaxing weekend we've had all October!  For that, I'm so grateful.  We enjoyed the beautiful weather and took the boys to the park to play after dinner on Friday.  And I'll add that I'm quite proud of myself for cooking all meals, all weekend.  I'm feeling like a boss.

I attempted to take some fall photos of the boys and struggled with my lens all evening.  I've dropped my 50mm lens twice over the past six months and I'm starting to think there's some damage to it.  Despite shooting in manual and focusing the camera like I usually do, the pictures were mostly blurry and out of focus.  I managed to get a few decent ones, but I was really disappointed.  The boys didn't seem to mind since they got to play in the leaves and at the park.

I had hoped one of them could be our Christmas card photo, but I'm not impressed with any of them enough for that.  Take two will have to be next weekend if the weather permits.

We took the boys home, got them in their spooky pajamas, and let them watch, "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" with popcorn and a fire.

Saturday started a full day of soccer games and  activities.  It was the last game for each of the boys and they were excited to earn their medals.  Sean's game was up first and it was also our snack day so we picked up Halloween decorated donuts from Dunkin' Donuts since it was a morning game.  They were a hit and the team ended with a win!  No goals from Sean this season, but it was a really tough season with big and fast kids.

Evan's game was later in the afternoon and after much bribing and negotiating, we actually got him to play.  He did great during the practice before the game and managed to go on the field four times throughout the game.  He didn't do much but tear apart leaves on the ground, but it was enough for him to earn a medal.  Man, I'm glad this season is over!

That evening we carved our pumpkins while watching Hocus Pocus.  The boys each chose a design from the book.  Evan picked a bat sitting on a tombstone and Sean picked a pirate ship.  They both helped scoop out in the innards.  Evan wasn't a huge fan, but Sean did a great job getting every last seed and fiber out!  I worked on cleaning the seeds and baking them while they finished watching the movie.  And of course, Scott and I were the ones carving.  It was a nice evening.

Sunday we decided to take the boys to the DIA to see the Day of the Dead exhibit.  Sean has been learning about sugar skulls in art class and he's taken a real interest in learning about Day of the Dead.  A boy after my heart!  The exhibit was fantastic and I enjoyed taking the boys down to Mexicantown for some lunch at Xochimilco's and some treats from La Gloria bakery.  I'll be going back tomorrow for the field trip with Spanish 3, but it was exciting to share it with my family.

Before we knew it, the weekend was over and Halloween was here.  Sean had his party and parade at school, along with a half day.  Luckily Nana comes on Mondays and helped make the day so smooth!  It really takes a village to raise children.  I hate having to miss out on moments like that at their schools, but my job is just not conducive to leaving for a period of time.  Nor can I afford the day off when we're only allotted 7 for the entire school year.  Nana snapped a picture of Sean in his parade and he came home with tons of goodies like cupcakes, Ghost marshmallows, and an adorable baby jar turned into a mummy with a tea light.  Something I'll cherish for years to come!

Evan doesn't go to school on Mondays, but he had a field trip last week to go trick-or-treating at a retirement home.  It's so hard to get pictures from his school, but I snapped these off their iPad using my phone.  Goodness gracious!  He had a great time and enjoyed dressing up as a Ghostbusters guy.

After rushing home from work on Monday, we got the boys dressed and headed over to my sister-in-law's house for dinner and trick-or-treating.  This has been our tradition since we moved to Plymouth five years ago.  It's always a favorite!  She made chili, kale salad, fruits and veggies, and some pumpkin dip for dinner.  I brought "build your own pizzas" for the kids.  After eating we did our annual picture on the porch of all the cousins and went out for candy.  It was the first year in a long time that it wasn't raining!  The kids took advantage of that and ran from house to house.  They lasted about an hour.  It was amazing to not have to carry anyone, bring a stroller or wagon, and to just wait on the sidewalk as they did their thing.  The kids are getting big...

It always seems like it's such a long stretch to Halloween.  Considering we started decorating and going to events at the beginning of October, it was a long month's wait.  I'm looking forward to putting the Halloween stuff away and just getting back to normal for a while.  I'm still amazed at the unusually warm weather we're having, but it's scary to think snow could come anytime this month.  I'll shove that thought aside for now and just enjoy November as it is.
