Because the dead of the winter isn't always the most exciting, there were lots of little moments this past month that I had to capture and share. We did our usual Ice Festival outing and celebrated our anniversary and ended the month with Bailey's 11th birthday. I baked cupcakes and the kids helped frost them (Bailey's were frosted with peanut butter and a dog treat, of course) and decorate them with sprinkles. Happy birthday, Bailey Boo!
The boys wrapped up their final class for Ninja Warriors and are going to return to Aqua Tots starting this Saturday morning. I'm kind of looking forward to having one more weeknight back without running around. But, the boys really loved Ninja Warriors and it's definitely something we'd be willing to do again.
Evan's been really into coloring and puzzles this month. We started our "coloring date" every Thursday for a half hour while Sean is in his piano lesson at a church. Evan and I don't say a word, but we sit there and color together. A lot of the evenings after dinner, he'll choose to work on puzzles. 100 piece puzzles are what he likes right now and occasionally I'll help him. Last Friday after work, it was in the 50's outside so we actually walked Bailey in the neighborhood and got out bikes to ride. Evan picked right back up from where he left off.
He got a new foam topper on his bed from Grandma and Grandpa since he's using an old twin mattress from when I grew up. It's made his bed super comfortable and so naturally, I had to get a picture of my little pookie bear sleeping.
At night, he's gotten into the routine of reading early reader books to us. He has the entire series of "My Alphabet Books" with simple sentences like, "This is a cat" or "I see a mouse". He's doing really well and even tried to read some of one of Sean's Little Critter books about going to the firehouse. They're working on sight words in his class for Me, My, The, and a few others.
Speaking of reading, Sean has finally moved up from level D to E. His teacher sent home the book above to have him read to us since he worked hard on it at school that day. While his progress is a bit slow and it's something we're watching both at home and in school, I'm proud of his effort and hard work. He's also seeing a math interventionist at school two days a week to get some extra help on math. His spelling has improved greatly! So, we're taking things one day at a time and we're working on building his confidence in all areas.
He's learning how to play some video games that we check out from the library, but I'm not sure he really loves them. He likes an app on the iPad from the Lego Ninjago movie better. He also enjoys playing with army toys right now and setting up elaborate scenes. He's helping me with my Disney Aladdin 750 piece puzzle from time to time too. Mostly, he's big into playing with friends. He's always wanting to have a friend over or to play with the neighbors. And girls...holy cow! He's talking about who he has a crush on, who he's going to marry, etc.
We've brought back our Friday night movie nights. Except I'm not going all out with tickets and themed treats. We made homemade pizzas and have a pizza picnic in the living room. They fell in love with Pete's Dragon on Netflix (such a cute movie) and last week Evan picked Tangled.
They hung out with me at work for a half day and a co-worker gave them a huge basket of beanie babies to play with. Some spray Lysol and they were good to go!
It's my co-worker's last day at work today and I'm definitely sad. Last summer my other favorite co-worker accepted a job elsewhere too and so now it feels like both my work besties have left me. It will be different without either of them around, but we had a good run. Coincidentally, we both wore similar outfits this week to work.
As January closed out and February started yesterday, I'm excited to be moving on to a new month. We'll be heading to Tucson two weeks from today for a short visit with my parents, we'll be celebrating Scott's birthday at the end of the month, and the boys will have Valentine's Day and their 100th day of school parties this month too. Time to get crafty!
