We all had school and work on Valentine's Day, but I left early and got my 6th hour covered so I could pick up Jimmy Johns, pick up the boys early from school, and get our luggage ready at home to go. My co-worker, Jennifer, picked us up and drove us to the airport and we were off! We had such a smooth experience navigating the airport and security! We even saw Andre Drummond from the Pistons board a flight at the gate next to ours. Man, is he tall!
Our flight, unfortunately, was pretty turbulent. The flight attendants were told to stay seated for the first hour, started passing out drinks, and were told once again to sit down. We didn't get drinks for 2 hours and 20 minutes into the flight. But, I scored a free Bacardi! American Airlines flight attendants are the best! Evan fell asleep for the last hour or so of the flight and Sean slept for the last half hour. The boys were so well behaved and Sean was once again, my brave helper. He held my hand every time it got turbulent.
We landed, deplaned, and raced off to meet my parents outside. It was 60 degrees and 8:30pm local time. The warm air felt amazing! We drove two hours from the airport on to Tucson and the boys slept most of the drive while I caught up with my parents. I was exhausted, but excited to be there!
The next morning the boys were up bright and early. I mean, 5:00am local time. Their little internal alarm clocks were all messed up! We watched the fog on the mountains, made breakfast, and watched them open their Valentine's Day gifts from my parents. Then it was off to the Gem and Mineral Show in downtown Tucson (with a stop first to pick up new pajamas for Evan from Target since I forgot to pack his....oops!).
The Gem and Mineral Show had some of the biggest tents set up I've ever seen before! In the first tent, they had some very expensive exhibits that were mostly for looking and a cool dinosaur exhibit too. The second, much larger tent had rows upon rows of booths set up and the boys loved picking out some of their favorites. A lot of the booths even had free gems and rocks for the kids to pick out.
We finished up around lunchtime and decided to eat downtown since we were already there. We picked a restaurant called The Hub that was delicious. Evan had a giant peanut butter and honey sandwich and Sean had a cheeseburger. The restaurant even made homemade ice cream that was to die for. I had a small sample of the "Mexican Wedding Cookie" flavor. Oh my goodness...
We walked through the oldest hotel in Tucson, The Congress Hotel, and saw some cool murals on our way back to our car. The kids were anxious to get back to the condo so they could go swimming. It was our warmest day forecasted while we were there so we needed to make use of the sunshine and warmer temps!
We put ourselves back together and decided to head out to Sabino Canyon to see the sunset before grabbing just a quick bite to eat at Chick-Fil-A. The kids protested a bit about going to the Canyon, but it was seriously five minutes down the road and I'm so glad we went. It was beautiful! And it was really, our first real glimpse of cactuses and nature here in Tucson this year.
Dinner was good, the kids were in bed early, and the adults enjoyed a cocktail while watching TV. The plans were to head to Tombstone the next day for a real cowboy town experience.
