We had plans made to go out to Timber Ridge to ski for the weekend back in January, but it slipped both our minds that Scott would be coaching all Saturdays in January and February like he has for the past 8 years. I was so bummed when we had to cancel those plans and the hotel reservation. However, last Friday, I was home from work with building issues at my school when Scott called me to say that his games on Saturday would be cancelled and would we want to go away for the weekend. I managed to make plans for Bailey (our neighbor's daughter watched her all weekend), book the hotel room for two nights, pack for all four of us, and load up the van by the time the boys got off the bus. We surprised them with the news and hit the road by 5pm!
We witnessed the prettiest sunset in Michigan I've seen in a long time driving out on I-94. We stopped just outside of Jackson to get gas and to pick up some Subway and by 7:30pm we made it to the hotel! The hotel was nice and right off the freeway. We drove through Kalamazoo and it was fun pointing out some of our stops off the freeway by Western. The boys checked out the room, made a mess in five minutes, and of course we headed on down to the pool and hot tub.
The pool and hot tub were fun! It wasn't crowded so that was nice. The boys got washed up for bed and it was lights out.
Saturday morning Evan was hot to trot to go down to the breakfast in the lobby. We managed to get there in time to see the groundhog come out for the big show in Pennsylvania. We ate our breakfast and watched the news coverage of it. It was kind of exciting to see it happen live.
Everyone got themselves ready to head out to Timber Ridge to ski for the day. The weather was awesome. Mostly cloudy with a high of 40. Timber Ridge was 15 minutes away from the hotel and we saw snowmobiles riding on the side of the road heading out. It wasn't very busy initially on the ski hills, but it got much more crowded after lunch. We spent about 45 minutes on the tow rope getting everyone back into the swing of skiing and then we were ready for the chair lift.
Evan was really comfortable cruising down all the green hills! I didn't feel like we needed to worry about him. He's quite the dare-devil. Sean, on the other hand, was much more cautious. There were a few episodes of whining and going on about how he can't make it down the hill, it's too scary, etc. I held his arm at the top of most of the hills because he was afraid of going too fast and getting separated from us, but then he went down the rest on his own. He was just overthinking everything. He'll get it! We'll get him out there again in a few weeks.
On the last run we did for the day, Scott's boot started falling apart and by the time we made it into the lodge an entire piece broke off! Considering these boots killed his feet I think he was happy to see it break. Looks like we'll be shopping for new equipment for him. We said goodbye to Timber Ridge (everyone was too tired to go tubing) and decided to go back into Plainwell for an early dinner at a brewery called Old Mills Brewpub and Grill. It was tasty!! I had a beer called the Crazy Beaver Cream Ale and I kept it healthy with BBQ grilled chicken, broccoli, and a baked potato. Everyone was really happy with their meals. And Sean polished off an adult's cheeseburger and fries!
We came back to the hotel early evening and let the boys swim for an hour. The hot tub felt amazing after skiing all day on sore muscles. We came back to our room and let the boys watch Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on the iPad with popcorn before bed.
Sunday morning we had a lazy start. Evan and Sean ate a little bit at breakfast, Sean went swimming with Scott, the boys watched cartoons, and we finally checked out around 9:45am to head over to a little breakfast spot in Richmond called Liz's Park View Cafe to meet up with my aunt and uncle. We enjoyed our breakfast with my family and hit the road to get home in time for the Superbowl and to unpack/do laundry. It was such a nice weekend away! Everyone enjoyed themselves and I can't wait to do something like this again next winter at a different ski resort. Brings back memories of doing this with my brother and parents growing up...
