Warren Dunes State Park Camping

Not even a week after school let out for the summer we were off on our first adventure of the summer: camping in Sawyer, Michigan!  This year we opted to go back to Lake Michigan, but wanted something different so Warren Dunes fit that bill!  It's south of South Haven and had some incredible sand dunes to climb and explore.

We left Thursday morning.  It was raining at home and for most of our drive, but stayed dry at our campsite thankfully.  We stopped in town at Greenbush Brewing Company for a big lunch and some beer.  It was a really cute place and we enjoyed the beer - mine tasted a lot like Soft Parade.

Check-in was at 3pm so we grabbed some ice and beer in town and arrived a bit early, but our campsite was ready!  We were campsite #1 and it was a great location: a path right by took us to the bathrooms and playground, we had a water spout at our spot, and the woods on one side of us (so only one neighbor!).  It took almost two hours to get everything put together and it sprinkled a bit during set-up.  But, we were ready to explore the campgrounds, find the bathrooms, and try out the sand dunes!

The sand dune we climbed was huge and quite the work out!  The boys played in the sand at the top and we chose not to keep going to Lake Michigan.  It would have been quite the commitment and the boys seemed tired.  We went back to the campsite and made hot dogs on skewers for dinner with pasta salad and fruit.  And of course we had s'mores!  Then it was time for the boys to get washed up and ready for bed.

The next morning we were up and moving pretty early.  Nobody slept the greatest.  The first night is always weird getting used to the noises and we were actually cold!  There was a raccoon who had made himself quite welcome at our campsite while we were sitting out at the fire so I was worried it was going to get into our stuff.  But, the trash on the roof of the car and a heavy cast-iron pan on the top of the cooler and they were unsuccessful at stealing anything!  We made breakfast and got ready to head on a hike through one of the trails.

The trail was a mile in each direction through the woods and dumped us out at Lake Michigan!  Everyone was so excited to get to the beach and even though the water was pretty cold, Evan didn't mind going right in, fully clothed!  He chased sea gulls, Sean found driftwood and shells, and we recooped after the hike.  We went back to pack lunch and get in our beach clothes.  We wanted to drive to the beach spot this time since we had a bunch of stuff.

The boys had a great time!  We had an ice cream treat at the little shop on the beach and they even had Italian Ice - yum!  We went back to get ready for dinner and for our friends to arrive and get checked in.  I made taco salad ahead of time at home so it was an easy dinner to throw together.  We watched their boys while they set up their site and then they came to ours for dinner, a bonfire, and drinks!

Saturday was a repeat of Friday, but with our friends this time!  Breakfast at our campsite to use the stove for pancakes and bacon, a climb up the sand dune for our morning hike, and then on to the beach!

The Green's cooked dinner at our campsite with grilled chicken and potatoes.  It was delicious!  We had another bonfire, a trip to the playground, a walk around the campsite, and s'mores.  It was our last night and we made the most of it before we had to pack up and head home.

Sunday morning we made one last breakfast with our friends, climbed the dunes one more time, and packed up to head home.  It was an exhausting day packing up and putting everything away when we got home.  We were ready for our own shower and our own beds, but we had a great time and really enjoyed Warren Dunes!
