The last weekend in October, I flew to Austin, Texas to celebrate Mindy getting married! She planned a trip to Austin with several of her friends and bridesmaids for a fun weekend away. I flew out at 4pm that Friday by myself since many of the girls had already went earlier in the day. I grabbed a quick drink in the airport to calm my nerves after Scott dropped me off. I ended up next to a grandma, a 6 year old girl, and an 8 week old puppy, that ended up being a blessing as they kept me company and took my mind off the flight.
I did a quick change in the bathroom in Austin's airport, grabbed an expensive Lyft and met up with all the girls at Salty Sow (a highly recommended restaurant). We had reservations at 7:15pm and I made it on time! It was awkward bringing luggage, but dinner was delicious!
After dinner, we took an Uber back to the hotel so I could drop off my luggage and then we were walking distance to the bars on Rainey Street. It was so much fun! We spent the entire night at the Container Bar and danced until our feet hurt. The music was fantastic!
The next morning I was up early so I went down and had breakfast at the buffet and brought my iPad to read. The other moms were up early too so I had company after a while. Texas shaped waffles were a big hit!
Over breakfast we decided to rent some Uber scooters and head over to the South Congress part of Austin, passing by the Colorado River, to do some shopping and strolling a popular street. It was so much fun on the scooters, although a little stressful at times figuring out if we should be in a bike lane on the street or on the sidewalk.
We went back to Rainey Street to meet up with the rest of the girls for a late lunch before we needed to get ready for the pedal pub. We ate at a cute little place called Javelina that had amazing tacos with chips and salsa. It hit the spot!
We changed back at the hotel for the pedal pub and took an Uber over to the starting point. After signing a waiver, it was time to get started! It was so much fun, but it was some legit pedaling too! Especially those hills! We stopped at two different bars for some drinks and before we knew it our time was up.
After the pedal pub we had a big decision to make...stay out drinking until our dinner reservation or head back to the hotel for a quick nap/shower. Apparently, I gave an award-winning speech that motivated everyone to stay out. We started walking towards the restaurant knowing we'd pass by quite a few bars on 6th Street and stopped at a cute place with a big outdoor space in the front yard. So many of these bars are built in old homes. We split a bottle of champagne, had some drinks, and played a game of "sack in the hole". It was a blast!
Dinner was at a cute place called Ranch 616 on 6th Street. We all enjoyed our dinner. Many of the girls opted to stay out and bar hop on 6th Street, but a few of us went back to the hotel to call it a night. I was exhausted from traveling the night before and staying out late, not sleeping in much, and then day drinking so it was a no-brainer for me. I was calling it a night.
Sunday morning was another early up for me. I ate breakfast by myself down at the buffet and did some reading on my iPad until the other girls got up. We decided to do a walk by the Colorado River to see the hot springs and to check out the trails. It was a beautiful morning and all of us were ready to burn off some of those calories from drinking. We ended up walking 6 miles and went all the way to Terry Blacks BBQ (a highly rated BBQ place) for lunch. It was my favorite meal of the entire trip! It was like a cafeteria in that you ordered your sides in one line, your meat in another. So tasty!
We went back to the hotel and enjoyed laying by the pool and soaking up the sun for most of the afternoon. It was quite crowded at one point, but we were lucky and got there to snag up some of the lounge chairs before that point. It was truly hot. It felt good to cool off in the pool and we could hear all the live music going on at the bars on Rainey Street below us. In fact, around 4pm when the sun went behind a tall building, we decided to get dressed and head down to Rainey Street to hear some of the music in person.
We found a fun bar called Unbarlievable that was a circus theme. They had a slide! And huge Moscow Mules to share with these really fun straws. We grabbed some appetizers there since none of us had eaten dinner. After a while, we ventured out to a few other bars, grabbed some greek food at a food truck, and made our way back to the circus bar since it was the most fun. So many funny memories and quotes from that night!
Monday morning we ate at the buffet again, packed up our room and hung out before heading to the airport for our flight. I'm so glad I went! It was a really fun weekend and I made a lot of cool friends from Mindy's circle of girls. She's got a great tribe of girls on her side!
