Sean's Freshman Wrestling - November/December

Sean joined the wrestling team in November and has had a few meets and tournaments already this season.  His coach is new to the district as a coach and he's been great!  Their varsity team is pretty small, but there's a good number of freshman (most of which are on JV) to help build the program.  Sean has been asked to wrestle varsity, which we are very proud of him for!

The first meet was a Tri-Meet in Grosse Ile on a snowy Wednesday night with Carlson.  Sean's first match against Grosse Ile he lost 10-8 after three full periods and even though he lost, he did a great job!  His second match against Carlson he won by void as they didn't have someone in his weight class at 144.  The second meet was just a dual against Father Gabriel Richard in Ann Arbor because there had been a snow day and cancelled the original meet.  Sean won his match by points after three full rounds!

His first tournament was a huge one in Wyandotte for all of Wayne County.  His coach said it would be good practice for him, but definitely a tough one.  Because there were so many kids at 144, they made a B bracket with 6 kids who either had a losing record or were freshman.  Sean was the 1 seed because he had won two matches and he was the only freshman.  It was a round robin bracket so he had to wrestle everyone.  He won his first two matches by pin and he was pretty amped up!  He lost his third match unexpectedly by pin and his fourth match by pin too.  His final match of the day he won by pin in the first period.  He came out hot and ready!  Overall, we were really pleased with how he did.  He took either 2nd or 3rd, but because it was a B bracket, they only gave a medal to 1st place.

The next school meet was at Gabriel Richard Riverview and included Wayne Memorial.  Sean unfortunately lost both his matches by pin.

He had practice over break and one tournament in Allen Park at the Dome at Melvindale High School.  His coach had all freshman go to the JV tournament.  Sean's bracket was huge with 14 kids.  He was the 3rd seed.  He won his first match by pin, lost his second in the last 3 seconds of the 3rd period, won his 3rd and 4th and had to crawl his way back on the losing side of the bracket.  For the 5th/6th place, he lost his match by TF in the last 10 seconds of the 3rd period.  He walked out with a winning record for the day, 6th place out of 14, and a broken blood vessel in his eye.  But, again, we're incredibly proud!  We can see him improve every time he's on the mat and it's so fun to watch!

This week they have a big home quad-meet with Plymouth, Brighton, and Hartland.  And there's another JV tournament he will do on Saturday in Warren.  Busy season for him, but I love it!
