We took a much needed weekend break and went up north for MLK weekend to ski. Sean originally didn't have any wrestling scheduled, but his coach added on a dual meet at Salem for their senior night and we opted to skip it. We knew we needed a 3-day weekend to justify all the driving and the only other option was President's weekend in February, but Evan has an indoor baseball tournament. We left on Friday after Scott got home from work and the roads were okay until after the Zilwalkee Bridge and then it was a "two hands on the wheel/don't go faster than 45 mph" drive the rest of the way. I think we were all glad to get there. Scott's parents weren't coming up until Saturday, so we had the house to ourselves. We ate snacks and watched some of the Stranger Things documentary until we all went to bed.

Saturday we were up and out the house by 8am to head up to Gaylord to ski for the day. The roads were a little slow with the fresh snow, but we sure enjoyed it on the slopes. The first hour and a half of skiing were perfection! Fresh snow, minimal crowds, peaceful and quiet. The kids didn't great skiing/snowboarding. We went in for an early lunch at the lodge and thankfully got a table. We skied the rest of the afternoon and took a break by the fire for a little while. It was a great day!
We left around 3:30ish and the roads were a little slick going back. We met up with Scott's parents at Merry-Hearted Cidery in Gladwin for some cider and they picked up pizza and bread from The Hearth on the way back to the house. We enjoyed the evening in playing cards and hanging out.
Sunday we all slept in and had a late breakfast. The kids wanted to sled so we got ready to do that. It was the most crowded I've seen the sledding hill before, but someone had made a fire and it was fun. We, of course, had to stop at the Dollar General for random goodies and came back to the house. I started a 1,000 piece puzzle of breweries and everyone helped. It was amazing! We built it in less than two hours. I made meatballs in the crockpot, pasta, salad, and breadsticks for dinner. Then, it was cards and football on TV for the evening. The boys introduced Nana and Pops to their skillet cookie recipe for a late night snack.

Monday, we knew we needed to leave as early as we could get up and moving with the forecasted weather. So, we were out the door and on the road by 10am. The roads were crazy. Wind blew and pushed the truck to the side and then we'd slide on black ice. Once again, I think we were all happy to get home safely. We made it home by 1:00pm after picking up some Wendy's, unloaded the truck, got laundry going, and rested the rest of the day. The kids and I played Ticket to Ride.
Evan and I are hoping to get some more skiing/snowboarding in this winter, but I'm glad we could keep our annual family trip up north going!
