The weekend before the fourth of July we were home this year. Since the fourth of July fell on a Wednesday this year, the lake did their fireworks the weekend after the fourth. Which meant that we could go to one of the Salute to America shows done at Greenfield Village with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. My parents go every year and have always raved about the event so I was really excited to go. However, it was a scorcher! Something like a real feel of 101 degrees...ugh!
We took the boys to an advanced screening of Hotel Transylvania 3 at the Emagine Novi at 3pm with my parents. We also made them nap right after lunch since Sean had a sleepover the night before with his buddy Corey and they were up pretty late.
We got to Greenfield Village right around 5:45 and got in line after going through a bag check. My mom squeezed ahead and walked fast to get a good spot in the shade. We set up our spot and had a picnic dinner of Jimmy John's sandwiches, chips, watermelon, and other snacks. The boys each wanted ice cream so we walked back to the custard shop. Evan got an root beer float, I had a custard twist, and Sean picked an ice cream cookie sandwich from the ice cream truck. It was refreshing on a hot day!
There was a drum and fife group walking around so we stopped to watch them perform. The boys went to see the cannons with Grandpa, and they played a game of Uno on the picnic blanket. The Army Field Band performed a few songs that we listened to before the DSO came on to perform. The 1812 Overture was awesome with the cannons blasting!
It got dark and just in time for the fireworks to start! It was a nice display and it seemed like it was over pretty quickly. We rushed back to our cars and made it out of there with no problems or traffic. We really enjoyed our night, despite the heat!
