Coronavirus Quarantine Week 8

We finally had some excitement this past week!  It started with absolutely gorgeous, warm weather that got us all geeked for the summer.  Saturday, it was 80 for a high and the sun came out mid-afternoon through the rest of the day!  Sean was excited because I had arranged a "social distancing" picnic lunch with his best friend, Corey, at Allen.  We met up with them at 12:30pm for lunch and then did a bike ride around Newburgh Lake bringing Evan along.

I read in the hammock for a while, we grilled chicken shish-kabobs for dinner, and then the boys had a Zoom call with their Cub Scout pack honoring National Camp In day.  While we didn't participate in camping in our backyard (didn't feel up to the work of putting all the gear up and out), we still had a bonfire and enjoyed the evening.  Since we didn't camp in the backyard I promised the boys they could sleep in my bed with me.  So, I got them ready for bed and we watched part of Moana, part of Beauty and the Beast, and finally the live-action Cinderella before they both crashed around 10pm.

Sunday was another glorious day outside and it was Evan's turn for his "social distancing" picnic lunch with his best friend, Ethan.  We met at a park off Hines Drive that we love going to since it has a stream running through it that the boys could play in.  I picked up a Happy Meal for Evan as a treat and off we went!  It was so nice to catch up with Ethan's mom, Andrea.

The boys played in the inflatable pool in the backyard when we got back home and we did more reading in the hammock and another bike ride before grilling dinner again.  Evan wanted to bake a skillet chocolate chip cookie that I had gotten the recipe from a friend on Facebook.  He was adorable!  Obviously, he's my Little Chef, but he took it to a new level by creating a bakery and serving all of us warm cookies and vanilla ice cream.

Monday kicked off week 8 of online learning and homeschooling.  The boys' teachers sent another set of 6 assignments plus work from the specials teachers to work on throughout the week.  Our added excitement was that it was May the 4th!  The boys participated in a cupcake baking challenge with their cousins, Sydney and Adelaide and they revealed their work over a Zoom call with the entire family at 6pm.  They watched Rise of Skywalker and enjoyed their day pretending they were Jedi!

Tuesday was Cinco de Mayo, which was obviously a big deal for me.  We also started the process of refinancing our house and working with Rocket Mortgage/Quicken Loans to get that underway.  In the afternoon, I showed the boys some videos on youtube to teach them about the significance of Cinco de Mayo and we got to town on our feast.  Margaritas, grilled chicken street tacos, homemade queso and homemade guacamole were some of our dinner courses.  Yum!

Wednesday Sean learned about acrostic poems and wrote a few on his own that were funny!  They made birthday cards for Sean's best friend, Corey, using Art Hub for Kids on youtube, and we took a long bike ride, where we ran into Corey and his family fishing on Newburgh Lake.  It was a beautiful day again weather wise!

Thursday we made the executive decision to do our morning work and then take the afternoon off to enjoy one last day of nice weather before the cold front moved in on Friday.  I took the boys to the Ann Arbor Botanical Gardens to walk the trails.  A fellow Cub Scout recommended it and we hadn't been to the Gardens in forever.  While the Gardens are closed, the trails are open and believe it or not, we've never done the trails.  They were awesome!  All under a mile each, but very picturesque and we saw lots of pretty birds, geese, and even a crane.

Friday the weather tanked, we stayed indoors, and the kids finished up their school work for the week.  The boys watched Thor Ragnarok in the Marvel series (only 4 more movies to go!).  I sold a few things off our front porch on Facebook Marketplace and did some reorganizing of the kids' clothes.  Real riveting stuff, but it had been a fun week for the most part and we had a few fun opportunities to visit friends from a distance.  Hoping the weather improves so we can continue to get outside and explore.  Stay home order is in place now until May 28th, which impacts our ability to go up north for Memorial Weekend, but hopefully it's the last extension and we can start to build a new normal this summer.
