Sean joined the East Middle School wrestling team, which is a no-cut sport for 6th-8th grade boys and girls. It's a 6 week season where they had practice daily from 3:15-5:15pm and eventually had two meets a week and one district tournament at the end of the season with all 5 middle schools. Sean was really lucky to have the Plymouth Canton Wrestling Club coach as the head coach this year, as he was filling in for the usual coach that had surgery earlier this year.
The first meet was an exhibition against Discovery. Sean was matched up against a boy who definitely was not in his weight class and had a good foot on him height-wise. Sean made it through the first round and was then pinned in the second.
His next meet was at home against Discovery again. Sean's cousins attended the meet and Sean pinned the boy in the first 20 seconds of the match.
The next week, at another home meet against Pioneer, but there weren't enough kids in his weight class for Sean to have a match. It was a bummer because Nana and Pops showed up to watch.
The final regular season meet was at West. Sean pinned the kid after going almost all three rounds. It was intense!
The following week the kids had the big district tournament. This was run exactly like a tournament during the Plymouth Canton Wrestling Club season with brackets for each weight class and medals for kids who placed. We were there from 4pm at Canton High School until just before 9pm, bringing dinner and snacks. Thankfully, Nana and Pops took Evan after school to dinner and to his baseball practice so that both Scott and I could attend.
Sean's first match was a quick pin and got him going over to the right side of the bracket.
Sean's third match was against the same boy he pinned from West after going almost three rounds. This time Sean was able to pin him at the end of the first round.
Sean's last match for 3rd place was against a boy from Discovery who was very strong and had more skill. They went almost all three rounds, but the other boy was dominating on points. It ended in a technical fall since the other boy was winning by 15 points. Sean was pretty bummed, as there were plenty of times Sean was so close to earning points but didn't turn around all the way.
As a school, East ended up winning the tournament by a landslide and they were able to keep their district title for the 3rd year in a row! Sean stuck around for the trophy ceremony and I'm glad he did. He went from not wanting to wrestling this season to having a good time, making new friends, and improving. The best part? He wants to wrestling again next year in 7th grade.
Sean's stats were 5 wins, 3 losses and 4 pins! He took 4th at the tournament. We're proud of you, Sean!
