Sean at 8.5 years old!!

This big guy turned 8.5 this week while we were home on Spring Break!  It's always fun that his half birthday is on April Fool's Day every year.  Although, this year we didn't really any pranks.

Sean's in Mrs. Barlow's second grade class this year and has been doing well!  She shared with us at a recent conference that Sean is great at coming up with cool ideas and loves to hypothesize when they read their class book together about what will come next.  He still sees both the reading and math interventionists, but he's making good strides with both.  He's currently reading level K/L books, is rocking his spelling tests weekly (even getting the challenge words right at times), has lots of friends that he likes to have play dates with outside of school, and loves to participate in school events
(box top sheets, helping out with Green Team, random contests, etc.). I think he feels very connected to his school!

He has math homework four nights a week, a spelling worksheet that's double sided and takes him two nights to complete, and spelling practice for his weekly spelling test.  He also brings home a book from the interventionist that he has to read.  He's been bringing home chapter books recently, so that's been exciting!

His favorite friends at school this year are definitely still his best friend, Corey.  But, he also talks about playing with Trey and Mario.  He's had a longtime crush on a girl named Daphne, but also speaks highly of Athena, who he works with in the classroom and at both interventionists.  Apparently, the teachers all decided Sean and Athena bring out the best in each other and they've partnered them up all day.

His class took a field trip this year to the Cranbrook Science Center back in January that my mom attended as a chaperone.  Sean had a great time with his friends on the field trip.  They also did an in-school field trip with a company that came in to do science experiments with all the second grade classes.  He also participated in a musical called "Where the Wild Things Are" with all the second grade classes and it was so cute!  He did great!  I came in as a surprise for the mystery reader this month too.

Outside of school he's been busy with indoor soccer through the travel team, Plymouth Reign.  He's not on the travel team, so it was nice of them to open up a winter camp for kids that play parks and rec soccer.  His spring outdoor soccer team just picked back up and they've had two practices so far.  They were put in Division 1 and ranked one of the top local teams so it should be an exciting season, but a tough one.  He's also been busy with a golf clinic at one of the elementary schools on Tuesdays after school for an hour.  He chose to not do baseball this spring and has committed to improving his golf game.

Sean's still huge into Lego, but has branched out a bit more this year to Roblox, Minecraft, Pokemon, and Star Wars toys as well.  He's enjoying the Roblox and Minecraft apps on the iPad and has been learning to play some videogames on the x-box too.  He plays Jurassic World toys with Corey and likes to spend any money he gets or earns on blind bags, JW dinosaurs, Pokemon cards, or Star Wars figurines.  I love that he can entertain himself for hours by just setting up little cities with his toys and battling.  He's so creative and is fantastic at building these scences, no matter which toys he's playing with.

He's around 52 lbs and 52" tall, although I'm guessing on the height.  He's wearing size 8 pants and shirts and a size 1.5 in shoes.  He's still a big fan of cheeseburgers, hot dogs, mac and cheese, peanut butter and honey sandwiches, chicken nuggets, pizza, and soup.  I can always count on him to eat his fruits and veggies so I'm pleased with what he's willing to eat on most days.

This has been a big year for Sean!  With his First Communion at church and him reading chapter books and playing video games, it's starting to feel like he's a big kid now.  I'm excited to see how this summer will be with him at home as he's learning to become more independent!  We are so proud of him!
