Skiing, sledding and an anniversary

January flew by!  Normally I feel like it drags, but I think going back after Christmas break on the 9th definitely helped it feel like it was going by fast.  We finally got some winter weather and snow, which has made for some fun days out skiing, sledding, and the kids building snow forts and igloos in our yard and the dead end.  We even got a snow day!  Here's some highlights from January!

The first dusting of snow came and the boys immediately went out with the neighbors.  I made hot chocolate for all 6 boys and they had a pretend nerf war outside!

Sean had his first indoor soccer game.  He's playing on a house team at High Velocity with a few of his teammates/friends, but the rest of the team are random kids.  They've lost their first two games, but he had a goal and even did a little celebration dance after scoring.  I just hope he has fun, even if his team doesn't win many games.  It will keep him in shape for spring soccer since he opted not to do the Plymouth Wrestling Club this year.  He will do his middle school's wrestling team that starts in March.

We celebrated our 14th wedding anniversary and opted to bring the boys with us this year to try Benihana's.  Scott and I haven't been there in many years and thought it would be a fun experience for the boys.  They loved it!  And I was so proud of how well they ate and their willingness to try new things.  It was a long experience though...whew!  Almost 2.5 hours!

We came home from dinner to the exciting news that we had a snow day!  Well, I did.  Scott was told he had to teach virtually and the kids were supposed to try for a half day, but we got the call Wednesday morning at 6:30am that school would be closed completely for the kiddos.  Poor Scott had to work in the basement on his laptop on and off all day, but the kids and I enjoyed playing outside with the neighbors and going through the woods to go sledding.  They used their hot cocoa bombs from Christmas.  We got about 6.5" total throughout the day!  It was beautiful.

Sean and I took advantage of all the new snow and his half day and went to Alpine Valley Thursday late afternoon to ski.  It was absolutely perfect!  Perfect conditions, perfect temperature outside.  We felt like there were no lines for the first two hours of skiing, then it picked up a bit later into the evening with ski school starting and high school ski and snowboard teams out and practicing.  We grabbed dinner inside and got hot chocolate at the end before heading home.

This weekend we opted to try a new sledding hill off of Hines.  This was at Cass Benton, where the disc golf course is and it did not disappoint.  The kids did not love climbing up the hill each time as it was a much bigger hill than where we normally sled, but it was a very fast hill!  The kids got hot chocolate and a cake pop from Starbucks in downtown Northville and then we went to the Northville Winery and Cidery to have my first drink in 28 days.  I did it (well, mostly!).  I made it 4 weeks dry for my version of dry January.  The winery was so fun as we chose to drink outside since we had all our snow gear on anyway.  The kids had a blast playing in the snow there and a train came by that they loved throwing snow balls at.  It was a fun outing!

Otherwise our days were filled with work, school, Evan's baseball practices, Sean's music classes, Lego building, movie watching, and using up gift cards from Christmas.  It's been a good month!  I like how 2023 is off to a good start this year....::knocking on wood::

Eric and Ana visit Michigan!

This past weekend Eric and Ana flew into Michigan to visit since they weren't able to come over the holidays.  They landed on Friday and went out in Ann Arbor with mom and dad for dinner at The Earl and drinks afterwards.  On Saturday, we met up with all of them in Detroit at the Detroit Historical Museum to start our busy day in Detroit!  I had no idea admission was free that Saturday so it was a bonus!  The museum was really nice and I'm glad I waited to take the boys until now because they seemed the perfect ages to enjoy the museum and exhibits.

After the museum we moved the cars to a parking lot by LCA and then took the Qline over to Campus Martius.  We looked at the tree and skating rink and walked next door to the Monroe Street Midway.  This was so fun!  They had a giant slide that was free, fire pits, bumper cars ($5 per person), an arcade inside a tent, and some other fun outdoor winter games.  The kids had a blast!

The kids both won a stuffed animal in the claw and then we were off to walk over to Mootz Pizzeria for dinner.  The pizza was tasty and those garlic knots....yum!  We took the Qline back over to LCA for the Red Wings game.  The kids loved going down to the ice during the warm-ups to try and get a puck.  They had two players toss one up to them, but some bigger kids got to them first.  The kids were happy to get a free bobble-head of some older players.  They lost 4-3, but it was a fun evening.

We got home and went to bed.  We were all exhausted from a fun day!

Sunday we met up with everyone for brunch at The Sardine Room in downtown Plymouth.  After brunch, Eric and Ana came back to our house so the kids could show them all their new stuff (Legos, drum kit, etc.).  We went for a walk by Newburgh Lake since the sun was out and it was...mild for winter.  Then, we drove over to mom and dad's house for the afternoon and a family dinner since Paul and Mary came in from the west side of the state.

We headed back home Sunday night around 8:30.  It's always hard to say goodbye, especially when we don't have anything planned for when we'd see them next.  They flew back to Portland on Monday late afternoon.  We enjoyed our weekend together!
