Valentine's Day 2023

This was the first year Sean didn't have to make or send Valentines for school.  He seemed fine about that until he came home from school that day and seemed bummed that Evan had a super fun day at school.  Sean, instead, had two tests to study and prepare for.  The realities of middle school.  Evan opted to give away smencils this year and we were short a few so he gave some football bracelets to his buddies that he plays football with at recess.

That morning I surprised them with a small gift.  They each got a small Valentine's squishmallow, one thing of candy, and a $20 Visa gift card.  We got Luna a new toy that lasted about a day and a half before she tore it up and got the squeaker out.

This year Valentines Day fell on a Tuesday and Scott had a dentist appointment in the evening.  We had to make sure we did our annual pizza and salad dinner and our chocolate fondue dessert was done before he had to leave.

It was a fun evening with the family!  Happy Valentine's Day!

Mid-Winter Break Staycation 2023

This mid-winter break we opted to stay home instead of going up north or going to Arizona to visit family.  Flights have been insanely expensive and Scott's parents were going to be out of town so it wouldn't have been as fun of a trip up to the cottage.  We agreed to dog-sit for one of our neighbors while they went up to Shanty Creek for the weekend to tube and do the dog sledding experience.  So, we planned some fun activities around home for the long weekend.

Friday the boys and I were off school/work, while Scott still had to work.  The kids built one of their kiwi-co kits that came that morning (a drifting motorcycle) while I went to my hair appointment.  Afterwards I picked them up and took them to Chick-Fil-A for lunch with our friends, the Millers.  We invited them back to our house after lunch for a couple of hours to hang out.  Then it was time for the boys to go to the neighbor's 8th birthday party at the Farmington Total Sports Complex for a Nerf battle and football.  I was able to drop off the boys and meet up with Scott a half mile down the road at a Los Tres Amigos for dinner and then we ran into TJ Maxx to shop before it was time to pick up the boys.  We came back and watched Moana together before the kids went to bed.

Saturday we enjoyed a pretty lazy day at home together while we dog-sat June.  The dogs had a blast playing outside and going for a walk.  I enjoyed watching some Mammoth Club episodes on Youtube.  Evan wanted to bake and he picked out a recipe from my cookie cookbook.  We made a peanut butter chocolate marshmallow pizza cookie.  It turned out delicious!  Sean had an indoor soccer game at 7:20pm that we all went to go watch.  His team is terrible, but Sean had a fantastic game and even scored at the end.  He's been playing well this season.  We ran into our other neighbor Shelley and her daughter at the complex and I invited her over to have a drink and catch up after the game.  It was nice to hang out.

Sunday Scott and I ran out to the Tile Shop in the morning while the kids stayed home with the dogs.  We are re-doing the fireplace and the tile on the floor by it.  We are whitewashing/painting the brick white, re-painting the mantle (possibly white...), doing the tile on the floor, and spray-painting the trim on the glass doors black.  It was not easy picking out tile.  I can't even imagine doing that for an entire room or an entire house.  We picked up some lunch to bring home for the boys afterwards.  We had plans to meet our friends from Canada at Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum later in the afternoon after Evan's baseball practice.  So, we drove out that way and enjoyed the arcade for an hour or so and then grabbed dinner out together.  It was a nice visit!  Just wish I had gotten a picture of all of us together or the kids at least.

Monday Scott went grocery shopping in the morning.  Sean had some homework he needed to do and some tests to study for.  In the afternoon I took the boys to Sky Zone to use our passes that were a Christmas gift and we went to Target afterwards.  The boys were so excited to see the new 2023 baseball cards had come out so of course they spend their money on those.  We did a Disney Movie Night featuring The Princess and the Frog complete with andouille sausage, dirty rice, beignets, and all!  We were in the Mardi Gras spirit.  It was a fun way to end our long-weekend and we said goodbye to June as her family returned home.

And just like that we were back to work and school the next day!  Well...all of us except for Scott who has the whole week off.

Ice Festival fun!

Earlier in February, Plymouth did their annual ice festival.  Scott and I have always admired the ice bar at E.G. Nick's, but we were never able to get a babysitter or find a moment to go out just us and enjoy it.  This year the boys are old enough to be left at home, so Scott and I were able to go out for a couple of hours to enjoy the ice bar and a band performing in a heated tent before the restaurant.  It was so much fun and we ran into some friends and co-workers!  The band played a wide variety of music.  We even slow-danced to Chris Stapleton.

The next day we took the boys and our niece, AJ, to the ice festival all bundled up to walk around.  We participated in the Bingo they do at the local businesses.  The kids got free hot chocolate at one place and some goodies from others.  The ice sculptures looked great!  We even went into the comic book shop to get boba tea and for the kids to play the arcade games for a bit.  The sun was shining and it felt so nice to walk around!  It was a fun afternoon.

AJ came over afterwards to hang out with the boys and ended up staying for dinner and one of our Disney movie nights where we watched the new Black Panther.  I'd say the kids had a great day and it was a fun weekend full of ice and winter fun!  I love that our city does these fun festivals.
